Shotokan Karate

Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art that emphasizes powerful strikes, precise movements, and strong mental discipline. Developed by Gichin Funakoshi, Shotokan focuses on self-defense, character development, and physical fitness through structured training in kihon (fundamentals), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).

With 35+ years of experience, a 5th degree black-belt, and a national and international coach and former competitor, Sensei Faouzi brings his love of martial arts and experience to our community; a sport focused on discipline and respect.

Do you have a sliding scale or aid available?

We do not have a sliding scale. For families needing after-school care, we encourage them to apply with CCAP (Child Care Assistant Program). Martial arts is included with the after-school care. Students on CCAP must attend a minimum of 3 days of after-school care at our facility.

Speak to the center director, Maryam, and she can guide you through the process. {she doesn't bite, promise}

Where are you located . . . How do we find youi?

The after-school program is held at 4411 Old Grand Ave, Gurnee, IL 60031.

We have our main building where (it looks like a house) and our dojo (it looks like a garage but SO much more).

But don't let the exterior fool you!

We're next to McClurg's garage (not sure if I can get you a discount, but I can try), and across from Viking Park.

 

What is the best age to start martial arts?

Martial arts can be started at any age, with programs available for children, teens, and adults. The appropriate age often depends student's physical and mental readiness. We have classes beginning at 4 years old. Check out our 2-week trial classes HERE.

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable athletic wear is recommended and bring a water bottle!

Gi's are available for purchase and would be required for membership after trial classes.

Do I need to be in shape before starting?

No, martial arts training helps improve fitness levels over time.Ā 

Our members begin at all different fitness levels.

How often should I train?

It depends on your goals and schedule, Our member requires a minimum of 2 times a week. More frequent training can be beneficial as you advance and may be needed to prepare for tournaments.

Do your memberships have contracts?

NOPE! No contracts ever! Cancel anytime.Ā We do not offer refunds.

Notify us prior for any extended time off that exceeds 5 days and we'll freeze your account so you don't loose out on anything!Ā

We do ask for a commitment. Come to each class mentally prepared to work. Give your best always and challenge yourself to do more each class.

What if I miss a class?

While consistency is key, we know life happens.

Classes can be made up the same week or the following week if needed. 

Send us an email and we'll get you marked down.

Do I need to buy my own equipment?

Basic uniforms are required after any trial period.

Gloves are required within the first month and must be purchased through our studio.

Do I have to compete in tournaments?

Competition is optional for students interested in testing their skills in a competitive setting.

We will ALWAYS encourage students to participate andĀ rip the band-aidĀ off the first time.Ā 

The initial tournament helps get theĀ jitters out for students and gives them a taste for the competition.
